How to Measure Your Dog’s Paws for Paw Grips

Start with a comfortable standing position

Choose a quiet moment and a stable surface. Place the paper so it will not slide, and let your dog stand on it with their weight distributed naturally. Keep the other paws supported on the same level.

Avoid measuring a paw held in the air. GentleKin’s size guide asks for a standing measurement, so a relaxed, supported position is the starting point for comparing your numbers with the chart.

Measure width and length

Follow the measurement illustration in the GentleKin size guide as you work. Mark the widest points across the standing paw and the front-to-back points shown in the illustration. Keep the pencil upright so the marks are close to the paw rather than angled away from it.

After your dog steps away, measure between the marks with a ruler. Record the width and length separately. Check the unit before writing either number down: mixing centimeters and inches is an easy mistake when moving between a ruler and an online chart.

Take a second reading if the paper moved, the paw lifted or a mark is unclear. A repeat measurement is more useful than trying to correct a line from memory.

Repeat for all four paws

Do not assume the other paws have the same dimensions. GentleKin’s fitting guidance calls for measuring every paw and comparing the largest width and length across the set.

Use a simple note like this:

Match both numbers with the current chart

Open the current size chart and select the same unit you used to measure. Check both width and length. A size that looks suitable by width may not be the right comparison for length.

GentleKin currently offers seven sizes, from XS to XXXL. Those labels belong to this product’s chart; an M in a sock or another paw product is not a reliable shortcut.

The chart advises choosing the larger size when measurements fall between sizes. If width and length point to substantially different choices, or the paws have very different shapes, send the measurements to GentleKin support before ordering. A specific answer is better than guessing from a breed photograph.

Check the order before applying the grips

When the product arrives, compare the selected size with your measurement notes and the fitting guidance before opening or applying it. Read the return policy beforehand so you understand the conditions for unopened items and for products that have been opened or used.

For application, the product instructions are: clean the paw pad, dry it completely, align the grip and press it firmly in place. Use the standing measurements. The GentleKin guide does not use breed to select a size because paw shape varies between dogs and between front and rear paws.

Should I measure only the front paws?

Measure all four. Record width and length for each, then compare the largest measurements with the product chart.

What if my dog will not stand still?

Take a break and try a calmer moment with help from another person. Do not force the position. If standing or paw handling seems uncomfortable, seek veterinary advice before continuing.

Can I reuse measurements from another product?
