Before You Head Out: A Safer Walking Checklist for Every Dog

Check the ground, weather, walking gear and your dog’s energy before every outing for a safer, more comfortable walk.

A Better Walk Starts Before You Leave

Daily walks provide movement, stimulation and valuable time together. But hot pavement, rough ground, low visibility and poorly fitted gear can quickly make an ordinary outing uncomfortable.

Before heading outside, take a moment to check the conditions and prepare for your dog’s needs.

Check the Ground and Weather

Pavement can become uncomfortable in hot or cold weather, while gravel, debris and uneven paths may be difficult for sensitive paws.

Test the surface, inspect the route and consider breathable, soft-soled dog shoes when extra paw coverage is needed.

Check the Walking Gear

A properly fitted harness should stay secure without restricting normal movement. Check the straps before each walk and make sure the leash attachment is fully fastened.

For early-morning or evening outings, reflective detailing can help your dog stand out when illuminated in lower-light conditions.

Bring Water and Follow Your Dog’s Pace

For longer walks, warm weather or travel, carry fresh water and offer regular breaks.

Watch for slowing down, repeated stopping, heavy panting or hesitation. A shorter, comfortable walk is more valuable than pushing your dog beyond what feels manageable.

The safest walk is not always the longest one—it is the one that matches your dog’s needs that day.
